FOXHAM
Reading Room and Free Library.
To the Members.
THE Reading Room and Free Library was built by me about 1884, on some land at Foxham belonging to Lord Lansdowne.
At the time of the recent sale of his Foxham Estate by Lord Lansdowne he conveyed to me for a nominal consideration the property in the Reading Room, and also the adjoining cottage which had generally been occupied by the Caretaker.
My desire being to give a permanent character to the Institution, I have put the building into thorough repair, and conveyed the property together with a sum of £500 which has been invested in good securities to Trustees under a Deed dated January 1st, 1912, for the benefit of the district.
The income of the Trust will consist of the interest of the above sum, and the rental of the cottage.
It will be the duty of the Trustees to pay all rates and taxes and other outgoings, and to provide for the maintenance and repair of the building. The residue will be handed over annually to the Committee for the maintenance of the Reading Room and Library.
The management will remain as before in the Committee elected by the subscribers, who with the income arising from the subscriptions of the members and the sum transferred to them by the Trustees, will, I hope, be able to carry on the institution in an effectual manner.
A clause in the Trust Deed enables the room to be used under regulations for public meetings, local enquiries, and village purposes generally.
The radius of the district is fixed at a circuit of 3 miles from the room.
The names of the first body of Trustees as set out in the Trust Deed itself will be found below.
(Signed)
